Here we have complied a small list of our favourite videos from the Early Years Foundation Stage Training course. They are good examples for early years practitioners and we hope you find them of use.
The videos are Crown Copyright. Permission for use was granted by the DCSF on 11 Feb 2009.
1.1 Child Development - Where’s Tyler
In this video clip, the child minder and the toddler are involved in a playful interaction involving words, actions and touch. Early relationships strongly influence how children develop and having close positive relationships with their careers is very important to their development.
“Babies and children develop their competence in communicating through having frequent, enjoyable interactions with other people, in contexts they understand.”

2.2 Supporting Learning - Taking Photographs
Positive relationships between the adult and child are highlighted in this video clip. In a nursery setting a child explores the environment with a digital camera. The practitioner offers support as together they discuss the photographs. The child is engaged in this self- initiated activity, confidently exploring and developing her interests. This learning journey is enhanced by the interest and involvement of the practitioner.
“Effective practitioners are able to tune in to, rather than talk at, children, taking their lead and direction from what the children say and do”
EYFS 2008
3.3 The Learning Environment - Playing with Sand and Water
The Early Years Foundation Stage promotes the value of the outdoor environment in supporting children’s development and understanding of the world around them. This video clip illustrates the practitioner’s skill at maximising the learning potential for the children, through first hand experiences of the weather.
“Being outdoors has a positive impact on children’s sense of well-being and helps all aspects of children’s development “
EYFS 2008
4.4 Areas of Learning and Development - Developing Independence
In this video, a pre-school child confidently engages in a creative activity of her choice. Adult support in facilitating an enabling environment will help the child to explore independently, learn to make choices, develop and practise new concepts and skills.
“Children’s creativity must be extended by the provision of support for their curiosity, exploration and play. They must be provided with opportunities to explore and share thoughts, ideas and feelings, for example, through a variety of art, music, dance, imaginative and role play activities, mathematics and design and technology.”
